American Dirt

I very much so enjoyed this book. It tells the story of a Mexican mother and son attempting to flee Mexico to “el Norte,” (USA).  Apparently there was a lot of controversy about this book shortly after it came out due to it being about the Mexican immigration experience, and yet written by a white woman. I can see how that may not sit well, however it is a fictional story yet the background info/research done to make it seem realistic seems to me to have been quite extensive??  All controversy and political stances or agendas aside, I felt it was an extremely well written and thought provoking book. It make the reader really see/feel things from the characters point of view.  You felt their panic and desperation and made you ask yourself the question of, “Illegal or legal, what would you do to save yourself and your child from being hunted done and killed?”  It really made you question what you’d do in a similar situation and for me, gave me a new found empathy for that situation. It made you understand the far reaches also of the Mexican drug cartel and how they are infiltrated into EVERYTHING….  How nothing there is completely safe and you can’t blindly trust anyone. It reaches into every area—from the government to police to shopkeepers to innocent looking children trying to recruit those in desperate situations.

Even though some love it, some hate it, I give this one a 4.2 of 5 I think….
