The Book Thief
The Book Thief (Marcus Zusak)
Another very good WWII book. A bit different though than a lot of WWII books I’ve read as it is more from the perspective, or following the lives of, German people (who are NOT Hitler fans). Really good story and also reminds the reader that not all German’s were drinking the Nazi KookAid ;). I thought that was important in the end because I personally always think Germany, WWII, bad….but really not all of the actual German citizens should be lumped together…I guess just like things here today! The first chapter or two were VERY difficult for me to get into though because the “narrator” of the book is unlike anything I’ve ever read before. Once I kind of accepted that (I guess???), I loved the story and actually even the odd perspective and commentary of the narrator. Even though it is all about Nazi Germany, I will say, it’s a much different vibe than The Nightingale, Winter Garden, All the Light We Cannot See, or any of the books that take place following the lives of Jewish people or in the concentration camps. Definitely worth reading. *It is a long one though —550 pages.
I’d give it a solid 4 of 5 stars. A 5 star will be reserved for those very few books that completely blew me away after finishing them. ;)
